What seemed just about impossible a year ago could be a very different story today. The Cook Political Report on Wednesday called the South Carolina Senate race between Republican Lindsey Graham and Democratic challenger Jaime Harrison a “toss up.” For real.
“Even Democrats in and outside of the Palmetto State are surprised such a typically red state is truly in play,” The Cook Political Report said. “Harrison has made this race about character and in other Democratic ads they turn the tables and paint Graham as part of the ‘swamp,’ and that seems to be working.” And Lindsey deserves it—no other Republican shed their skin and showed their true colors quite like this one-time Trump critic turned sycophant.
The Cook Political Report said Harrison began the year with “impressive fundraising totals” that are only expected to continue, after saddened—and angered—Democratic donors gave a massive number of donations to ActBlue following the death of the late justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. “All that has enabled Harrison to blanket the Palmetto State airwaves in a way no Democrat—or Republican either—has ever been able to do,” The Cook Political Report continued.
Just as importantly, Harrison appears to be connecting to the everyday worries of South Carolinians. When Graham tried to mock Harrison for the plexiglass partition between the two during their recent debate, Harrison connected it to the precautions we’re all having to take to ensure the well-being of our families. “Its not just about me, it’s about the people in my life that I have to take care of, as well, my two boys, my wife, my grandma,” he said according NBC News.
Harrison raised another $1.5 million following the debate, Forbes reported. And yes, dear God, has Graham felt the once-secure ground underneath him quaking. He said as much when he appeared on Fox News to not once, but several times beg for money. Publicly, shamelessly, pathetically beg for money, maybe so he could run yet another racist ad against Harrison:
Graham’s campaign admitted this past summer to using an “artistic effect” to darken Harrison’s skin in an ad, in a move slammed by Harrison surrogate and South Carolina state Rep. JA Moore as “disgusting. “ He told CNN that “[i]t's the kind of dog-whistle politics that the Republican party has been practicing for a number of years now. This is the oldest trick in the book.” But that’s Graham today.
Daily Kos Elections earlier this month noted the close race between Graham and Harrison. “Quinnipiac's newest poll of the South Carolina Senate race finds Republican incumbent Lindsey Graham deadlocked 48-48 with Democrat Jaime Harrison, which is the same result that the school found two weeks ago. However, the school also finds Donald Trump dropping from a 51-45 edge in mid-September to 48-47 now.” Let’s give both Graham and Trump the boot.
