Today, the results of NM-01's special election will be released. The first district was vacated following former Congresswoman Deb Haaland's historic nomination to the Department of the Interior as the first Native American woman to hold the position of Interior Secretary. Early voting has been substantial, with nearly 100K ballots cast early, though at least 20K have been cast today as well.
Democrats nominated state representative Melanie Stansbury, who faces Republican state senator Mark Moores. Former state Commissioner of Public Lands Aubrey Dunn Jr., a Libertarian, is also running in the race. Former Congresswoman Haaland won this seat 58-41 in November, and President Biden won it 60-37 over former President Trump. The district is also highly diverse, with over 50% of its residents being non-Hispanic white.
Polls close at 7PM local time.
